LSZH cable
The LSZH cable (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) is a halogen-free, low-smoke cable, designed to limit the risks linked to smoke and corrosive gases in the event of fire. It is favored in projects where the safety of people and the protection of equipment are priorities..
ZMS Cable offers a range of LSZH cables, of the low voltage power cables (N2j, N2XCH) to flexible cables (H05Z1Z1-F, H07zz-f), suitable for public buildings, to hospitals, to data centers and tunnels.

Qu'est-ce qu'un câble LSZH ?
LSZH signifie Low Smoke Zero Halogen, or “low smoke emission, zero halogen ». It designates cables using halogen-free insulation and sheath materials, generally based on polyolefin compounds, replacing halogenated materials like PVC. In case of fire, these materials notably limit emissions of smoke and corrosive acid gases.
Quelles sont les caractéristiques d'un câble LSZH ?
An LSZH cable is distinguished in particular by three characteristics linked to its behavior in the event of a fire :
- Low smoke — reduced smoke improves visibility and facilitates evacuation.
- Free of halogens — LSZH materials do not contain halogens such as chlorine, bromine or fluorine.
- Reduction of corrosive gases — the absence of halogens limits the formation of corrosive acid gases that can damage equipment.
What types of cables LSZH offers ZMS ?
Low Voltage LSZH Power Cables
Halogen-free N2XH cable 0,6/1 kV
The N2XH cable is a rigid low voltage power cable, halogen-free and low-smoke. It is designed for fixed installations up to 0,6/1 kV, particularly in buildings subject to high fire safety requirements. Its cross-linked polyethylene insulation (XLPE) offers better thermal resistance than traditional polyvinyl chloride insulation (PVC).
The halogen-free N2XH cable particularly suitable for fixed electrical installations in public buildings, hospitals, data centers, shopping centers and other infrastructure. According to the installation conditions and project specifications, it can be installed on cable tray, in conduits or directly.
ZMS Consulting : N2XH constitutes a preferred solution for the low voltage power supply of buildings with high occupancy density or housing sensitive equipment. On the other hand, its rigid construction is less suitable for applications requiring repeated bending. In this case, and flexible LSZH cable may be more appropriate (see below : LSZH flexible cables).

LSZH, LSOH or PVC : what differences ?
LSZH and LSOH : what a difference ?
LSZH and LSOH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen et Low Smoke Halogen-Free ou Low Smoke Zero Halogen) actually refer to the same cable technology. LSOH is an older name, still used in some countries (especially in the United Kingdom), while LSZH has established itself as the most common designation internationally. There is no technical difference between the two : an LSOH cable and an LSZH cable meet the same requirements of low smoke emission and absence of halogen.
Not to be confused with LSF (Low Smoke Fume), a similar name but which does not guarantee the total absence of halogens - checking the technical sheet remains recommended in case of doubt about a less common abbreviation.
LSZH and PVC : what a difference ?
PVC remains the most common insulation material for electrical cables, but it releases chlorine when it burns – causing the dense smoke and corrosive acid gases mentioned above. LSZH was developed as a direct alternative for environments where this risk is unacceptable.
| Characteristic | LSZH / LSOH | PVC |
| Signification | Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LSOH : equivalent name depending on the region) | Vinyl polychloride |
| Smoke broadcast | Weak | Generally higher |
| Presence of halogens | Halogen-free | Possible presence |
| Corrosive gases in case of fire | Very weak | Most important |
| Confined Space Safety | Very good | More limited |
| Typical applications | Buildings, hospitals, data centers, transports | General electrical installations |
| Cost | Generally higher | Generally more economical |
How to choose LSZH cable ?
The choice of a suitable LSZH cable is based on four successive checks, in this order :
Check the nominal voltage
The nominal voltage (U₀/U) allows you to determine the cable family suitable for the installation. Depending on the application, LSZH cables can be available in different voltage ratings, For example 300/300 V, 300/500 V, 450/750 V you 0,6/1 kV. The cable tension must be compatible with the network voltage and installation requirements.
Déterminer le type d'installation
A fixed installation (cable tray, conduit, embedding) and a mobile installation or one subject to repeated bending do not orient towards the same type of construction. A rigid low voltage cable and a flexible cable do not respond to the same mechanical constraints. This distinction directly determines the family of products to be retained..
Check security requirements
Depending on the nature of the building or infrastructure, the specifications may require specific performances in terms of reaction to fire, particularly regarding flame propagation, the emission of smoke or the corrosiveness of gases. These requirements can be defined in the specifications, project specifications or applicable regulations. So it is better to check them before selecting the cable.
Choose the appropriate construction and section
Once the nominal voltage, the type of installation and safety requirements defined, it is necessary to determine the number of conductors. The drivers section, expressed in mm², is then chosen according to the admissible current and the installation method, taking into account if necessary the voltage drop. Finally, depending on the installation environment and the risk of mechanical damage, it should be determined whether additional protection, like armor, is necessary.

LSZH Cable FAQ
Quelles normes s'appliquent aux câbles LSZH ?
The applicable standards are divided into three categories :
Fire behavior standards — they define the performances measured during a fire :
- IEC 60332 : flame propagation along the cable
- IEC 60754 : absence of halogenated gases and acidity of the fumes
- IEC 61034 : density of smoke emitted
Product standards — they define the construction of the cable according to its type : IEC 60502-1 for rigid low voltage cables (N2j, N2XCH), IN 50525-3-31 for flexible cables and wiring wires (H05Z1-K, H07Z1-K), and IEC 60228 for driver characteristics.
Regulatory classification (CPR) — for projects in France and Europe, the regulations Construction Products (CPR) imposes a fire reaction class (for example Cca-s1,d1,a1 or Dca-s2,d2,a2 depending on the model). This classification varies from one model to another within the same LSZH range : it must be checked individually on the technical sheet of each reference, and not deducted from the type of cable alone.
Are LSZH cables suitable for outdoor installations ?
Non, not by default. The standard LSZH formulation is optimized for fire safety in indoor environments and does not necessarily offer UV or prolonged moisture resistance. For outdoor installation, it is necessary to check the presence of specific UV protection or to opt for a sheath adapted to climatic exposure.
Why are LSZH cables more expensive than PVC cables ?
The additional cost is explained by two factors : the halogen-free polyolefin compound used for insulation and sheathing costs more to produce than standard PVC, and LSZH cables must be tested and certified according to specific standards (IEC 60332, IEC 60754, IEC 61034), which adds a compliance cost that classic PVC does not have to bear. This additional cost is generally offset by the reduction in the risk of fire and damage to equipment..
Un câble LSZH a-t-il une durée de vie différente d'un câble PVC ?
An usage normal, the lifespan of an LSZH cable is comparable to that of a PVC cable equivalent, generally estimated between 20 et 30 years depending on installation conditions. The difference is not in the lifespan in normal operation, but in the behavior in case of fire — this is the criterion, not longevity, which motivates the choice of LSZH on a project.
