Fiber Optic Cable
Fiber optic cable is a type of cable that uses very fine glass or plastic fibers to transmit light signals. These light signals can be used to transmit information at very high speeds, making it a popular choice for long distance communication networks. They are usually covered with a protective sheath to protect them from bending, pressure and corrosion.
Types of fiber optic cables available at ZMS Cable
Types of optical fibers (SMF & MMF)
Single-mode optical fiber (SMF)
The single-mode optical fiber (SMF) has a very fine heart (environ 9 µm), allowing the propagation of a single light mode.
It is designed for Long distance transmissions with very low attenuation and excellent signal stability.
Unlike multimode fiber, she does not suffer from dispersion modale, which makes it ideal for wide area networks and Critical infrastructure.
Typical applications :
- Long distance telecommunications networks
- FTTH networks (Fiber To The Home)
- Liaisons interurbaines et backbone
- Critical network infrastructures
Types of single-mode fibers :
OS1 : indoor facilities, controlled environments
OS2 : external networks, long distances, standard of modern infrastructures
ZMS Consulting :
For projects exceeding several kilometers or requiring maximum reliability, the single-mode fiber is the recommended choice, despite a higher active equipment cost.
For projects requiring long distance transmission, high reliability or scalability (operator networks, urban infrastructure, interconnections), the fibre OS2 is highly recommended.
OS1 remains suitable for indoor installations with cost or controlled environment constraints.
Types of single-mode fibers
Single-mode fibers are mainly classified into OS1 and OS2, according to their structure and transmission performance.
| Type | Structure | Distance | Mitigation | Applications principales |
| OS1 | Tight fiber (tight buffer) | Medium to long | Higher | Indoor networks |
| OS2 | Fibre loose tube | Longue distance | Very weak | External networks, backbone, telecom |
| Setting | Heart diameter | Transmission distance | Mitigation | Cable cost | Cost of equipment | Applications principales |
| Typical value | ≈ 9 µm | Up to several tens of km | Weak | Moderate | Pupil | Telecom, FTTH, backbone |
Multimode optical fiber (MMF)
The multimode optical fiber has a larger heart (50 has 62,5 µm), allowing the propagation of several light modes simultaneously.
It is designed for transmissions short and medium distance, with an optimized overall installation cost.
Due to the dispersion modale, the signal may degrade more quickly over long distances, which limits its use in extended networks.
Typical applications :
- Local networks (LAN)
- Data centers
- Industrial and tertiary installations
ZMS Consulting :
For internal networks or on-site industrial installations, multimode fiber reduces equipment costs while providing sufficient performance.
For modern networks and data centers, fibers OM3 or OM4 are generally recommended, while OM1 and OM2 are rather used for existing infrastructure or projects with a limited budget.
Types of multimode fibers
Multimode fibers are classified from OM1 to OM4 according to their performance in terms of speed and distance.
The higher the OM index, more fiber provides better performance for high-speed networks.
| Type | Typical flow | Distance | Source | Applications principales |
| OM1 | ≤ 1 Gb/s | Short | LED | Old networks |
| OM2 | ≤ 1-10 Gb/s | Average | LED | LAN |
| OM3 | ≤ 10-40 Gb/s | Average | Laser | Data centers |
| OM4 | ≤ 40-100 Gb/s | Longer | Laser | Data centers haute performance |
| Setting | Heart diameter | Transmission distance | Mitigation | Cable cost | Cost of equipment | Applications principales |
| Typical value | 50 has 62,5 µm | Up to a few hundred meters | Higher | Slightly higher | Weaker | LAN, data center, industry |
Difference between single mode and multimode fiber
Single-mode optical fiber and multi-mode optical fiber meet different distance needs, performance and cost.
The choice mainly depends on the installation environment, transmission range and overall project budget.

| Typical applications | Telecom, backbone, FTTH, long distance networks | LAN, data centers, internal industrial networks |
How to choose between single mode and multimode ?
Choose single-mode fiber if :
- the distance exceeds several hundred meters
- the project concerns a telecom or inter-site network
- stability and scalability are priorities
Choose multimode fiber if :
- the network is local (building, factory, data center)
- the distances are short
- optimization of equipment costs is a key criterion
ZMS expert council :
In industrial or tertiary projects, multimode is often sufficient for internal networks.
On the other hand, for any interconnection of sites or critical infrastructure, single-mode remains the most sustainable solution.
Air optical fiber cable
ADSS cable - self -supporting metal -free air cable
The ADSS cable (All-Dielectric Self-Supporting) is an aerial fiber optic cable without a metallic conductor. Light, Flexible and weather resistant, it is suitable for installations on telecom poles or lines medium voltage, without earthing. Its all-dielectric design makes it ideal for environments with strong electric field.
Applications :
- Aerial telecom networks
- MV power lines
- Rural or difficult to access areas
ZMS Consulting :
The choice of a ADSS cable must take into account the scope (span), climatic conditions and electrical environment.
For installations on MV or HV lines, it is recommended to use a sheath anti-tracking (AT) to ensure better sustainability.
OPGW cable - Optical fiber for high voltage lines
The OPGW cable (Optical Ground Wire) is a fiber optic cable embedded in a ground conductor for high voltage lines. It ensures both the lightning protection and data transmission, by replacing the traditional guard cable. Thanks to its metal structure, it offers excellent mechanical resistance and great reliability in demanding electrical environments.
Applications :
- High voltage transmission lines
- Telecommunications networks of energy operators
- Infrastructures backbone longue distance
ZMS Consulting :
The OPGW cable is particularly suitable for new power lines or ground wire replacement projects.
His choice depends on the short circuit current capacity, mechanical constraints (scope, charge) and optical transmission requirements.
Ideal solution to integrate telecommunication et energy transport on the same infrastructure.
OPPC cable - Optical fiber cable integrated into the driver
The OPPC cable (Optical Phase Conductor) incorporates optical fibers directly into the phase driver of a power line. It allows the simultaneous transmission of energy and data, Without adding additional cable. Ideal solution for medium and high voltage networks, in case of space constraints or advanced integration needs.
Applications :
- Medium voltage distribution lines
- Smart power grids (smart grid)
