Shield Types and Configurations

Single shielded cable

  • Structure :
The simple shielding composed of a copper braid or a aluminum tape, surrounding the drivers of the armored cable to provide basic EMI protection.
  • Features :
Effective protection against electromagnetic interference (EMI) in standard industrial environments. Shielding generally made by copper braid or aluminum tape, providing stable EMI protection with good flexibility.
  • Typical applications :
Used in control systems, industrial automation and installations where EMI interference remains moderate.
  • ZMS CABLE expert advice :
The single shielded cable is recommended for standard control and signal installations. In the presence of power equipment or variators, and double shielded cable is often preferable.

Cable with double armor

Double shielded cable

  • Structure :
Two layers of armor combined, generally aluminum tape + copper braid, forming a double shielded shielded cable for enhanced EMI protection.
  • Features :
Combination of two screens (often aluminum tape + copper braid) greatly improving the attenuation of perturbations EMI/RFI. Configuration offering a 360° shielding more efficient and better signal stability in disrupted industrial environments.
  • Typical applications :
Suitable for frequency variators, to industrial motors and systems ofindustrial automation sensitive to interference.
  • ZMS CABLE expert advice :
The double shielded cable is recommended when cables are installed near power equipment. For very sensitive signals or very disturbed environments, and fully shielded cable may be preferable.

FAQ – Shielded Cables

1. What is the difference between shielded cable and unshielded cable ?

A shielded cable has a metallic layer (copper or aluminum) which protects against electromagnetic interference (EMI).
An unshielded cable (UTP) does not have this protection, but it is more economical and flexible to install.
Shielded cable is recommended for industrial or sensitive environments, while UTP is sufficient for a classic home network.

2. Which is better between STP cable and FTP cable ?

The STP (Shielded Twisted Pair) protects each pair of wires individually, providing better isolation in areas with high interference.
FTP (Foiled Twisted Pair) has overall shielding, lighter and easier to install.
FTP is often the best choice for offices and tertiary buildings, while the STP is suitable for demanding industrial installations.

3. Can a shielded cable be used without grounding ?

Non. Without earthing, the shielding does not work properly and can amplify disturbances instead of reducing them.
To guarantee the performance of the shielded cable, it must always be earthed according to good installation practices.

4. Is a shielded cable needed for a home network? ?

In most cases, an unshielded cable (UTP) enough for a home network.
However, a shielded FTP cable can be useful if your installation is close to sources of electrical interference. (high voltage lines, powerful devices, etc.).

5. Why shielded grounded cable can sometimes perform worse ?

This often comes from poor grounding creating a ground loop.
Incorrect wiring can cause extraneous noise.
A properly installed shielded cable always improves signal stability and speed.
