1. What is the difference between shielded cable and unshielded cable ?
A shielded cable has a metallic layer (copper or aluminum) which protects against electromagnetic interference (EMI).
An unshielded cable (UTP) does not have this protection, but it is more economical and flexible to install.
Shielded cable is recommended for industrial or sensitive environments, while UTP is sufficient for a classic home network.
2. Which is better between STP cable and FTP cable ?
The STP (Shielded Twisted Pair) protects each pair of wires individually, providing better isolation in areas with high interference.
FTP (Foiled Twisted Pair) has overall shielding, lighter and easier to install.
FTP is often the best choice for offices and tertiary buildings, while the STP is suitable for demanding industrial installations.
3. Can a shielded cable be used without grounding ?
Non. Without earthing, the shielding does not work properly and can amplify disturbances instead of reducing them.
To guarantee the performance of the shielded cable, it must always be earthed according to good installation practices.
4. Is a shielded cable needed for a home network? ?
In most cases, an unshielded cable (UTP) enough for a home network.
However, a shielded FTP cable can be useful if your installation is close to sources of electrical interference. (high voltage lines, powerful devices, etc.).
5. Why shielded grounded cable can sometimes perform worse ?
